OUR TASK

In 2017, IUAV University celebrated Carlo Scarpa's 90th birthday with two exhibitions taking place at Tolentini, the historical site of the University. The temporary installation is built for the exhibition "Guido Guidi. Indagine sulla tomba Brion” .

THE CONTEXT

Historically considered the headquarters of the school of architecture, the former convent of Tolentini hosts the director's office and the library. Since 2017, the building has housed exhibitions on the themes of art and architecture opened to the IUAV community and the city.

THE PROJECT

Barman architects, in collaboration with Mariano Andreani, provided the design and production of a display wall where the pictures were attached.

The challenge was to keep using Aula Magna while the exhibition was running.

The project tries to minimize its presence, becoming a new gate for the university community's most representative “room“.

CABO LEDO FISH MARKET

Project Theme: Urban Design

Project Year: 2015

Location: Cabo Ledo, Angola

Client: Gabinete de Gestão do Pólo de Desenvolvimento Turístico de Cabo Ledo

Site Dimension: 1080 Sqm

Building Dimension: 550 Sqm

Design: Barman architects with Idiogramma Arquitectura

Project Team: Roberta Bartolone, Irene Cogliano, Epandi Antonia Dos Santos Vandunem

OUR TASK

The project is part of a broad program of interventions promoted by the Pólo de Desenvolvimento Turístico de Cabo Ledo (P. D.T.).

THE CONTEXT

Cabo Ledo is a commune in the Municipality of Luanda located on the coast of the Parque Nacional da Quiçama. The general objective of the plan promoted by the Pólo de Desenvolvimento Turístico de Cabo Ledo is to transform the village into a new tourist hub.
One of the main actions promoted by the P.D.T. is the renovation of the existing Bairro dos Pescadores. The task of Plano Piloto is to enhance local activities, such as fishing, promoting the interaction between inhabitants and tourists.

Scalone monumentale all’interno di Ca’ Tron

THE PROJECT

The new market rises on a plot that could overflow during the high tides. For this reason, the sales area is raised on a podium, reachable by ramps and steps. The ground level is designed as an ample outdoor covered space open to the sea view. On the upper floor, a large terrace is equipped with tables, seats, and inclined and colored canopies that offer shelter to those who want to taste the fish cooked in the restaurant on the block at the end of the street.

The volume where the restaurant is located is on two floors.

The main facade follows the street curvature and is decorated by geometric patterns, characteristics of African textures.

The terrace railing is made of woven fabric panels decorated with local textures.

The colors of the sand, the decorations' geometries, and the space's visual permeability distinguish the simple volumes of the new Cabo Ledo market.

OUR TASK

The International design competition “The Waterproof“ aims to:

  • Open a reflection on the digital manufacturing theme applied to the world of architecture, stimulating a single language in constructive processes between companies and professionals;
  • Take advantage of the opportunity to make product and process innovation with the know-how of Venetian historical companies that can support the designers throughout the design process;
  • Imagine a coherent system of macro strategies, which must be able to interact with the existing building and the surrounding historic fabric, and micro solutions of technological and constructive details, which must be part of a single project and easily achievable;
  • Obtain ideas for an innovative way of recovering a Venetian historic building while maintaining a respectful dialogue with pre-existence. The possibility of adding a new construction piece will be an incentive to give a unique appearance to the building, making it the symbol of the synergic relationship between history and contemporaneity;
  • Promote a new use of an academic space, which must become a reference for students and citizens in Venice. This innovative place must also become an example of flexible intervention, capable of adapting to climate change and global environmental challenges.

This competition allows us to work on a crucial issue in our architectural vision: any interventions in a historical context have to be a sustainable process that deals with conservation, technological, and language aspects and a responsible

THE CONTEXT

The Ca’ Tron Building, a historical palace overlooking the Canal Grande, represents the synthesis of shapes and additions that, over time, have modified and innovated the original appearance of the building. On a small scale, this building is an example of the tendency for Venice to be a laboratory of renewal experiences of past architectures.

Scalone monumentale all’interno di Ca’ Tron

THE TOPIC

Despite Venice being home to conservative extremism, its artistic-cultural history tells us a different story.

It is a center with extraordinary historical value that complements styles and languages at a limited physical distance. This determines the power of its image.

Venice can renew itself and accept testimonies of different times without diminishing value.

The project for the Ca’ Tron Building represents an opportunity to develop strategies to weave new relationships between building and context, explaining the potential of the reuse of historical heritage to build “better architectures” able to respond to the needs of the present without betraying the authenticity of places.

THE PROJECT

The project tries to imagine a programmatic future, even before a spatial one.

Redesigning the new entrance becomes an opportunity to improve the usability of the building, imagining it not only as a university but as an extension of the public space within the city.
The wings of the building, at all levels, are equipped to accommodate spaces strictly related to educational use and services connected to it.

Historically used as entertainment spaces, the halls, and the garden lend themselves to hosting activities, such as exhibitions, conferences, and small performances. They are not directly related to academic activities but are included in the broader circuit of the city’s cultural offer.

At the last level, a small guesthouse is set up to accommodate researchers and students who take advantage of the wide range of university educational exchange offers.

The idea is that students who will occupy the new temporary teaching center can take advantage of the outdoor space, a place of relationship and sociality shared among students of different universities.

In this view, it was chosen to remove the existing fence and operate the maximum permeability of the west face of the building.

The construction time, conceived as part of the project, allows the use of the building throughout the construction phase.

It is an ideas contest and a view of a city to trace the future of a possible Venice.

OUT OF THE BLUE

OUT OF THE BLUE

Project Theme: Urban Design | Temporary installation

Project Year: 2019

Client: Municipality of Venice

Location: Venice, Arsenale Nord

Site Owner: State Property

Site Dimension: 170 Sqm

Design: Barman architects with Roberta Martel and Filippo Andrighetto

Project Team: Roberta Bartolone, Giulio Mangano and Roberta Martel, Filippo Andrighetto

Status: Built

OUR TASK

“Out of the blue” is a temporary installation built in an open-air area with heritage value, facing the Lagoon of Venice and Murano Island. The project aims to valorize the north entrance to the Arsenale area on the occasion of the Venice Boat Show of 2019. “Out of the Blue” incorporates a strong sense of place—reflecting the Venetian lagoon, its landscape, and its distinctive color palette.

THE CONTEXT

Located on one of the pedestrian access streets to the Arsenale north, the installation was built on the back of the monumental area of Tese, a system of historic warehouses connected by large arches. These buildings symbolize the centuries-old military domination of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the beating heart of its naval industry. The project area offers an incomparable view of Murano Island and the lagoon and the historical context of Arsenale right in the center of Venice.

THE PROJECT

Before the intervention, the green area was in a complete state of abandonment. The project, close to zero budget, aims to recover the site by transforming it from a place of passage to a viewpoint far away from crowds of tourists. The project comprises two simple elements: a mirror and a circle-blue sand square. The first one covered the façade of a not-restored twentieth-century building. The mirror has an inclination that allows you to reflect the lagoon landscape and the sitting point created within the circle of blue sand with two pieces of Istrian stone recovered from the Arsenale.
